The Summer Palace is located in the northwest of Beijing Haidian District, 15 km from the Beijing City. It is a large scale natural landscape garden based on the foundation of Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, also the scenery of West Lake as the chief source, absorbing the design method as well as the artistic conception of traditional southern Chinese garden. It was also an imperial garden with an area of 290 hectares which was the largest and most complete protection. It is one of the four famous landscape gardens (the other three are The Imperial Summer Resort of Chengde, the Humble Administer’s Garden as well as the Liu Garden of Suzhou, obtaining the reputation of the museum of the royal garden.
