During May 10-13, the UN World Tourism Organization held the 105th meeting of its Executive Council in Madrid, the capital city of Spain. All of the 33 member states of the Executive Council sent high-level delegations to the event and the 26 UNWTO member states out of the Executive Council, 23 affiliated members, and international organizations such as WTTC also attended the meeting as observers. Among the 330-plus participants, there were 18 ministers and 33 ambassadors. The Chinese delegation was led by CNTA Vice Chairman Du Jiang.

This meeting attracted extensive attention because it will elect the only candidate of UNWTO secretary general for 2018-2022. This only candidate was Zurab Pololikashvili, Georgian ambassador to Spain. The election result will be submitted to the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly for approval in September in Chengdu.

Du Jiang delivered a speech on behalf of China at the meeting, introducing the latest progress of tourism in China in 2016 and the preparations for the General Assembly to be held in Chengdu, and inviting all participants to this coming event.

During the meeting, Du Jiang exchanged opinions with incumbent UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai, WTTC President David Scowsill, and heads of delegations from Columbia, Georgia, Bulgaria, the Philippines, and South Africa. In addition, the Chinese delegation also had working consultations with the relevant officials of the UNWTO Secretariat on the preparation for the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly.
