China Tourism Promoted in Vietnam in China-ASEAN Tourism Cooperation Year

On July 10, CNTA staged the “Beautiful China” tourism promotion activity in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, one of China's efforts to lure more inbound tourists from ASEAN countries. In May, Chinese president Xi Jinping and his Vietnamese counterpart Tran Dai Quang who was in Beijing for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation reached consensus on “promoting cooperation in cultural, educational, aviation and tourism sectors, and creating conveniences for the communication and mutual understanding between Chinese and Vietnamese people”. In an earlier visit to China, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong inked the Plan between CNTA and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam on Tourism Cooperation 2017-2019. Such top-level design has created strong momentum for in-depth tourism cooperation between the two countries. As this year marks the China-ASEAN Tourism Cooperation Year, CNTA naturally focuses its resources on exploring the ASEAN travel market by adopting differentiated tourism promotion and marketing strategies for ASEAN countries. This was the second marketing activity CNTA has launched in six tourist sources of ASEAN.

It attracted an audience of more than 200, including representatives of tourism companies, airline companies, and media organizations in both countries and local tourism authorities from China. Counselor Zhang Xilong from CNTA Tourism Promotion and International Cooperation Department said, “China and Vietnam enjoy unparalleled conditions for tourism cooperation. Recent years have witnessed progress in bilateral tourism exchange and cooperation, with two-way visits exceeding seven million. Our cooperation has also been fruitful in establishing the tourism coordination mechanism and in training tourism professionals. The Chinese government is vigorously advancing holistic tourism, the Toilet Revolution and the tourism+ strategy, and the Chinese tourism industry has been deeply integrated into economic and social progress and infrastructure progress, laying a solid foundation for China to further explore the Vietnamese travel market.” He stressed, “Tourism will enrich the connotation of China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership. As Mr. Ho Chi Minh said during his trip to China, ‘When you climb onto the mountain top, you’ll have the panoramic view of the whole landscape’. We should also climb high and gaze far in our tourism cooperation and I believe there's more potential to be tapped in the Vietnamese market.

Nguyen Quy Phuong, director of the Travel Department of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), left Hanoi for the event and welcomed the Chinese tourism delegation on behalf of VNAT. He said, “We have long valued tourism cooperation with China and have been working hard to create a more convenient travel environment for Vietnamese and Chinese tourists and encouraging law-based cooperation between tourism companies in both countries. This promotional activity will help build a bridge connecting tourism companies and media outlets in both countries. It’s also a good opportunity for Vietnamese tourists to learn more about Chinese cultural and travel in China.”

Chinese acting consul-general Zhou Tong remarked, “The signs of cultural exchange and mutual learning between and integrated development of China and Vietnam are everywhere in both countries. Chinese and Vietnamese people are historically bonded and have easy access to visit each other. I hope this promotional activity would create opportunities and serve as a platform to inject vitality into Sino-Vietnamese relations in the new era. Vietnamese people are welcomed to visit and experience China, and we will offer conveniences and support for you in this regard as usual.”

For the marketing tour in ASEAN, CNTA has prepared thematic brochures, videos and PPT presentations tailored to different ASEAN countries to promote 10 tourism brands and 15 classical travel routes including the Silk Road, the ancient Great Wall and the Tea Road in cooperation with Guangdong, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Guizhou, Tianjin, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, Tibet and Qinghai. On that day, a marketing specialist was invited to present the beauty of China to the Vietnamese audience from different perspectives. Later, ethnic songs and dances performed by the Muye Art Troupe from Guizhou won applauses from the crowd.

Local tourism professionals agreed that this promotional activity was refreshing and showed them the huge potential of developing China travel products. They were particularly interested in tourism products in Central and West China. A Vietnamese tour guide said excitedly, “I’ve been in this industry for over 20 years. In my opinion, trips to China render other trips unnecessary. China’s beautiful and the travel expense is low. That’s why this year many Vietnamese tourists have chosen to travel to China. Zhangjiajie is their favorite.” The head of a local travel agency said the activity brought home to him the diversity and richness of tourist attractions in China. And he believed that China's tourism products could satiate the growing demands of Vietnamese tourists. According to a Vietnamese sales manager, the promotional materials were well-prepared, containing thematic travel routes with illustrations. He was captured by them immediately and found a lot of valuable information in them. The videos screened also boosted his confidence in China’s tourism products. “After exchanging with other business insiders, I cannot wait to launch China travel products.”

The climax came during the lucky draw when generous awards were announced. Among them were free travel to Changsha - the capital city of Hunan province, Zhangjiajie - a world heritage site and the ancient Phoenix town. One of the award winners said in great excitement, “I’m so lucky. I love China very much and I’m dying to visit China. It’s my dream. I want to thank the Chinese tourism delegation for making my dream come true.”

Earlier on the morning, another promotional activity themed on Guangxi tourism was held in the city too. The tourism delegation also held a meeting with the Chinese Consulate-General to discuss how to further explore the Vietnamese travel market.
