The 22nd UNWTO General Assembly was unveiled in Chengdu, China on September 13. Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres sent congratulatory messages which were read out by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang and UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai, respectively. The opening ceremony was chaired by CNTA Chairman Li Jinzao. Other speakers included Mr. Wang Dongming, Party Secretary of Sichuan province and Mr. Sandra Howard Taylor, chair of the previous edition of the meeting and tourism minister of Colombia.
Among the audience were His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, President for Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH); His Excellency Ali Asghar Mounesan, head of Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran ; His Excellency Mikheil Janelidze, Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Georgia; His Excellency Joe Natuman, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister of Vanuatu; His Royal Highness Simeon II of Bulgaria; His Excellency Abulfaz Qarayev, UNWTO Executive Director and Tourism Minister of Azerbaijan; His Excellency Pascal Lamy, President of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics; His Excellency Yin Li, governor of Sichuan province; His Excellency Jiang Zelin, Deputy Secretary General of the State Council; His Excellency Du Jiang, CNTA Chairman; and His Excellency Fan Ruiping, Party Secretary of Chengdu city.
In his congratulatory note, Xi wrote, “Tourism is a major bond between different countries and cultures, an efficient boost for the economy and the jobs market, and an important industry to improve people’s livelihood. My government highly values the development of tourism and the Chinese tourism industry has contributed over 10% to the national economy and employment. The next five years will see 700 million more Chinese traveling overseas. We also welcome more international tourists to China to explore and experience her long history, splendid culture, magnificent landscape and cultural diversity. The UNWTO has played an active role in promoting global tourism development and international tourism exchange and cooperation. I hope that you will make the best of this meeting to contribute more to global tourism development.”
